gematria is an ancient system of numerology that assigns numerical values to words and sentences. Originating from the Greek word geōmetreia, gematria uses a code to count the numerical value of each letter in a word in order to determine its meaning. Gematria has been used for centuries by scholars, mystics and religious practitioners alike, in Hebrew and other languages in which each letter of the alphabet has a numerical equivalent.
Unlike other forms of numerology, gematria is based on patterns and codes which are believed to be reflections of divine truth or cosmic harmony. Ancient writings depict gematria as being meaningful to spiritual practice in most all religious traditions; from Kabbalistic applications to Christianity, Maori belief systems and Eastern mythology.
The most popular form of gematria is the Hebrew Gematria system, commonly referred to as the Jewish mystical tradition attributed with encoding truths into words. This form of Gematria looks at both the numerical values assigned to each letter within a word as well as how similar letters correlate within certain combinations. In essence, when examining individual letters or combinations they can be seen as having deeper spiritual significance. For example, using this type of system, one might find that multiple uses of variousletter combinations lead back to similar numeric values, with each having its own distinct spiritual meaning ascribed to it by ancient beliefs.
